Causes and signs of dental anxiety

People experience dental anxiety for a variety of reasons and it can look very different depending on your situation, personality, and history. A traumatic event, fear of pain, fear of needles, generalized anxiety, or other existing mental health issues are just some of the common causes of dental anxiety.

Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize what exactly is causing your anxiety and how to address it, especially if you’re not sure of the root cause.

Here are a few common symptoms of dental anxiety:

Increased heart rate

Trouble sleeping or focusing leading up to an appointment

Frequently canceling appointments

Stomach pain or nausea

An empathetic, patient-centered approach to dentistry

From general nervousness to severe dental anxiety, it’s common for patients to experience emotional discomfort before and during procedures and exams. At Cedar Village Dentistry, we work to not only provide practical options for our patients, but also to create an environment that feels warm, welcoming, and relaxed.

Anxiety doesn’t have to stop you from getting the care you need and deserve. We ensure open communication with patients so you never have to worry about asking questions. We’re ready to help you find an individualized approach that addresses your concerns.

Sedation options for patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia

Patients with anxiety enjoy working with us because they always prioritizes comfort and offers a completely judgment-free environment. Sedation dentistry can be a wonderful option for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety and can ensure you receive the care you need without fear, pain, or worry.

IV sedation

Through an intravenous injection, a saline solution containing sedative medication can be used to put patients to “sleep” during a dental procedure. IV sedation can be a good choice for those with severe anxiety since the level of sedation is adjustable. This means you can remain conscious if you would like to, or undergo heavier sedation if you begin to feel more anxious or uncomfortable.

Oral sedation

For patients who may suffer from a fear of needles, oral sedation may be the perfect option. We can offer you medication that you can take an hour before your procedure that will help relax your body and mind. You might even fall asleep!

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is a great option for nervous young children and those with milder forms of dental anxiety. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is administered through a breathing mask. The effects will make you feel light, happy, and relaxed. Nitrous oxide also wears off the same day, meaning that you won’t have to experience long-term fatigue or plan your entire day around your appointment.
